Togethering

Togethering – a Spiral on Love and Relating

Facilitated by Sara El-Sayeh

I spend a lot of time thinking about love, care, belonging and togetherness. What do we need to be able to nurture one another and be together, truly be together. Have we forgotten? Am I over-romanticizing the notion of love? What does love look like in the everyday practice of it?

Many, many people have theorized about love, even more people have written poetry about love and yearning. I have written a lot of poetry about yearning…

On the one hand, there is yearning, where something is missing from us, where there is a deep desire for another: a person, place, situation, memory – something that is not here, now.

Then comes the practice of togethering, which, to me, feels like a more active verb and is a whole other playing field.

When we’re alone, or in small groups, relating tends to be simpler, there aren’t many versions of truths and realities that we can be in friction with. The bigger the group, the more complex the field of relating becomes.

(I’m not saying that one-to-one relating is easy, in fact, personal relationships offer a lot of edges for us to grow through.)

I came to the idea of designing this spiral on love and relating following my own curiosity and in response to the amount of space love and relating take up in my thoughts and my life.

To be honest, I don’t know what to expect.

I’ll be doing this with you,. I’ll be sharing my thoughts and musings, the resources I have and the experiences I’ve gone through. I am not promising any answers, what I am promising is that we move beyond the philosophical and into the practical. Because love, like change, like ceremony and all things sacred, lives (and thrives) in the mundane.

We’ll be following the expanded spiral of the Work that Reconnects as was taught to me by Molly Brown, Constance Washburn and Mutima Imani.

Sara El-Sayeh, SJ FDP co-facilitator

Sara El-Sayeh (she/her), M.A. is an Egyptian writer, (single) mother and facilitator roaming the fault lines of Cairo. Sara has an MA in economics in international development and spends a lot of time contemplating life post growth. She’s a Post Growth Institute fellow (2025) and works with the imagination as an important tool to carry us forward on the path of degrowth.

Post-revolution and mid-collapse, her work explores what it means to belong, and at times completely refusing to, in a place that demands that she becomes convenient.

Sara maps the geographies of single motherhood: the labyrinth of repair and care as resistance. Her work helps (her) navigate the freeze of capitalism while slowly weaving communities of care to nourish us through times of collapse.
