The Great Turning & The Unfixing – Film Screening and Conversation with the Director Nicole Betancourt about the power of creative alchemy when everything seems to be falling apart.
The stories we tell ourselves shape our bodies and the landscape. If we hope to end the patterns of destruction created by the dominant cultures in our world, we have to start with our inner maps. How can we unfix ourselves from our current patterns and dream a new world into being? Nicole discovers her own answers to these questions in her poetic personal film The Unfixing — which she says was heavily influenced by learning from Joanna Macy, her experience with The Work That Reconnects, and as a Donella Meadows Sustainability Leadership Fellow. After completing the film she did the Spiral Journey WTR Facilitation Training which has helped her as she speaks with audiences around the world about her film. She is now on the board of our governing entity, Gaia Passages.

About the film:
The Unfixing is a poetic exploration of a mother’s journey from illness to healing, framed by the intensifying global climate crisis. The film presents a richly textured visual diary, capturing the intimate moments of Betancourt’s personal struggles with a debilitating illness and the ripple effects on her family, all while engaging with larger ecological questions. As her body begins to break down, so too does the planet – both requiring a radical transformation and renewal.

“Completely stunning and powerful, making us think and contemplate connections between things that people don’t usually make and the film is groundbreaking in that way. It is visceral, relatable, mystical and spiritual.”
— Alan Berliner, Emmy Award winner & Guggenheim Fellow

“An evolutionary film featuring the human condition as a reflection of our Mother Earth’s health and healing processes… I recommend this film for all people, and especially our young people who are the next generation(s) of caregivers.”
— Sandra Owén:nakon Deer, Indigenous Educational and Curriculum Specialist

“The Unfixing is an absolutely remarkable film and it is so artistically told. This is ultimately a film that is so full of hope.”
— Robert Emmet, Thoughtline, KFJC Radio

“Wholly original cinema that people hope to see at a film festival… The Unfixing is an art film inside a memoir.”
— The Movie Gourmet

“Gorgeous, incredibly deep and wide, and truthful. Its prescription has good results in one swallow”

— Sheila Nevins, winner of 11 Oscars, 31 Emmys, & 42 Peabodys
